Arteriovenous Fistula and Dialysis Access

Vital Information

Definition & Symptoms

Patients with end stage renal failure will often require haemodialysis. A surgically created arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is a connection made between an artery and a vein, most commonly in the arm, to provide reliable access to the bloodstream for hemodialysis.

The high-pressure arterial blood flows into the vein, causing it to enlarge and strengthen over several weeks. This makes the vein robust enough to withstand repeated needle insertions during dialysis treatments.

Our Opening Hours

Arteriovenous fistula Surveillance:

Following surgical creation regular clinical review and ultrasound imaging of your AVF will be performed by Dr Nathan Biggs. This will ensure your AVF continues to function effectively and prevent complications from occurring.
