Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that forms in a deep vein, most often in the leg, which can cause swelling, pain, and tenderness.
A serious risk is a pulmonary embolism (PE), where the clot breaks off and travels to the lungs, blocking blood flow.
This primarily involves anticoagulant medications (blood thinners) to prevent the clot from getting larger and to stop new clots from forming. In addition appropriately sized graduated compression stockings are used.
In certain presentations, particularly those with large blood clot burden and severe symptoms may require surgical intervention. This will usually involve catheter directed thrombolysis (clot dissolving agent) with the aid of a thrombectomy device to mechanically remove the blood clot from the vein.
